Ayurveda : “ The Science of Life ”
By Hari Simran
Kaur & Devi Dyal Khalsa

It has been an honor and blessing to learn this  incredible science of Ayurvedic Medicine from my
dear friend and teacher, Dr. Vasant Lad. Dr. Lad is a Master Ayurvedic physician and the founder of the
Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque New Mexico. I was his very first patient when he opened up the first
clinic in 1984 and have been studying with him ever since. I received my certificate from the institute in
1990 and have been practicing the lifestyle and giving workshops ever since, and guess what?, it works!!
Ayurveda is a holistic system of medicine. It is considered to many scholars to be the oldest healing
science. Ayurveda means “Science of Life” Ayu means “life” or daily living and veda means
“knowing” This healing system has been practiced In India for more than 5000 years and is often called
the Mother of all healing.  The principles of many of the natural healing systems now familiar in the west
have their roots in Ayurveda, including Homeopathy and Polarity Therapy.

Ayurveda identifies three basic types of energy or functional principles that are present in everyone and
everything. These principles can be related to basic biology of the body, these concepts are called vata,
pitta and kapha are three major body types. According to Ayurveda health is a perfect state of
balance among the body’s three fundamental energies, or doshas (vata, pitta, kapha.) and an equally
vital balance among body, mind, and soul or consciousness.

As a science of self-healing, Ayurveda encompasses diet and nutrition, lifestyle, exercise,
rest and relaxation, meditation, breathing exercises, and medicinal herbs, along with massage, cleansing
and rejuvenation programs for healing body, mind and spirit. Numerous adjunct therapies such as sound,
color and aromatherapy may also be employed. The purpose to Ayurveda is to acquaint you to the lifestyle
choices and learn the self-healing modalities that are right for you to create, maintain, or restore health and
balance.
